You've watched the tutorial. Maybe twice. You paused it, wrote down the steps, followed along exactly β and the second the video ends and you're back in the actual software by yourself, the confidence goes with it. Not because you didn't understand the video. Because the video showed you one path through a screen that has forty of them, and the second you veer even slightly off that path, you feel like you've already failed the assignment.
That's not a comprehension problem. You understood every step. What you didn't get, because almost nobody gives it to you, is permission to be wrong on the screen without it meaning anything about you.
Confidence with technology was never about knowing more buttons. It's about being willing to click one you're not sure about and find out.
What tutorials actually teach you
A tutorial teaches you one correct sequence, performed by someone who already knows where all forty other buttons lead and simply isn't showing you. It looks like clarity. What it actually models is fluency, which is a different thing entirely β fluency is what happens after a hundred wrong clicks, not instead of them. Watching fluency doesn't transfer fluency. It just sets a bar you're now comparing your own hesitant first attempt against, unfavorably, every time.
This is why so many capable, otherwise decisive women describe feeling suddenly out of their depth with tech specifically, when they run entire households, teams, and businesses without a shred of that hesitation elsewhere. It's not a skills gap. It's that everywhere else in your life, you've built up enough reps to trust your own judgment when you're not sure. With software, most people never get the reps, because the moment they'd normally be getting them β the trial, the wrong click, the 'oh, that's not it' β gets treated as the failure instead of the actual lesson.
Picture the actual moment this shows up: you're setting up a new scheduling tool, you hit a screen with six settings you don't recognize, and instead of trying one, you close the tab and tell yourself you'll 'look into it properly later.' Later rarely comes, not because you got busy, but because the screen never stopped feeling like a test you hadn't studied for. The tool sits half-set-up for months, doing a fraction of what it could, not because it's complicated, but because six unfamiliar words on one screen were enough to end the attempt before it started.
The click you're avoiding
Here's the thing almost nobody says out loud: most software is built to survive your mistakes. The undo button exists because the people who built the tool assumed you'd click the wrong thing constantly β it's not a hidden feature for experts, it's the safety net built for exactly this moment. A settings menu you haven't opened yet isn't a locked door. It's a room you can walk into, look around, and walk right back out of unchanged.
I watch this hesitation constantly with clients who are sharp in every other part of their work β women who will renegotiate a contract without blinking, then freeze at a dropdown menu because they're afraid clicking it will 'break something.' It almost never breaks anything. The fear isn't really about the software. It's about a much older rule that says getting it wrong in front of anyone, even yourself, means you weren't supposed to be doing it in the first place.
You are allowed to not know what a button does and click it anyway. That is not recklessness. That is how every person who looks confident with technology actually got that way.

Why guessing is the actual skill
The people who look effortlessly capable with any new tool aren't operating from more knowledge. They're operating from a higher tolerance for being temporarily wrong. They click the unfamiliar button, see what happens, and adjust β three seconds, no ceremony, no story about what it means that they didn't already know. That tolerance is the entire skill. Everything else is just repetition on top of it.
This reframes what 'digital confidence' actually is. It was never going to arrive as the day you finally know everything a piece of software can do β nobody gets there, not even the people who built it. It arrives the day you stop needing to know everything before you're willing to try something. That shift can happen in an afternoon. It doesn't require a course. It requires one deliberate wrong click that turns out to be completely fine.
It also tends to arrive faster than people expect, once they actually let it start. The first wrong click that turns out to be harmless does more for someone's actual confidence than an entire course of tutorials, because it's evidence instead of instruction β proof, from their own hands, that the screen didn't punish them for not already knowing. That kind of proof is the only kind that actually sticks.
A smaller way to practice this
Next time you're in a tool you already use regularly, click one thing you've never clicked, purely to see what it does. Not something urgent, not something attached to a deadline β a menu item, a settings tab, a small icon you've scrolled past a hundred times without curiosity. Look at what opens. Close it. That's the entire exercise, and it works precisely because nothing is riding on it.
Do that once a week and something quietly shifts. Not your knowledge of that specific tool β your relationship to not knowing, in general. The next unfamiliar screen stops registering as a threat and starts registering as a place you're allowed to look around in. That's the actual transferable skill, and it's the one no tutorial can hand you, because it only builds through the exact thing tutorials are designed to help you skip.
This is worth doing even in tools you already consider yourself fine with. Confidence that only exists inside one familiar app isn't confidence β it's memorization wearing confidence's clothes. The version that actually holds up is the one that transfers to the next unfamiliar screen, the next new tool your business ends up needing, the one nobody handed you a tutorial for because it didn't exist yet when you learned everything else.
The real question
So here's the one worth sitting with: how much of what you call 'not being a tech person' is actually just an old rule about what happens when you get something wrong in front of yourself? Most of the people who look natural with technology aren't more naturally gifted at it. They just stopped treating a wrong click as evidence about who they are a long time ago.
You don't need the tutorial that finally explains it perfectly enough that you never make a mistake. That tutorial doesn't exist, for anyone, including the people who look like they've never needed one. What you need is permission β from someone, and eventually just from yourself β to guess, watch what happens, and keep going.
